What causes incontinence?

Incontinence can be caused by a variety of factors. Most commonly, it is caused by an infection in the urinary system (urinary tract infection), increased pressure on the bladder (stress incontinence), weakened muscles in the pelvic area (functional incontinence), certain medications, underlying illnesses, bodily injury or life events such as aging or pregnancy.
